FAQs About Our Retaining Walls
What is a retaining wall?
A retaining wall is a near-vertical structure that is used to hold back soil in a location where it would otherwise slope naturally down. The resulting landscape creates flat ground surfaces at two or more levels, creating more “usable” land for backyards, gardens, pathways, driveways, roads, and more. Each retaining wall is carefully engineered to ensure it is strong enough to contain the soil, with a sturdy base, strong construction materials, and drainage that stops water pressure from building up behind the wall.
What type of retaining wall should I choose?
You can choose from a concrete sleeper, hardwood sleeper, or treated pine sleeper retaining wall. The best material for your job will depend on your budget and required durability of the retaining wall. Treated pine is the lowest cost material but least durable, concrete sleepers are a higher cost option but extremely durable, and hardwood sleepers fall somewhere in the middle.
How long will my retaining wall last?
The expected life of a concrete sleeper retaining wall is 50-100 years, while a hardwood sleeper wall and treated pine wall each tend to last around 30 and 20 years, respectively.

What council regulations apply to retaining wall installations?
In the Moreton Bay Regional Council (where we’re based, along with most of our projects and customers), there are several relevant laws to keep in mind for retaining walls. For example, building approval is required if a retaining wall is higher than 1 m or closer than 1.5 m to a building or another retaining wall, or if it has a surcharge (e.g. large rainwater tank) on its high side. If a fence is connected to the wall that makes the height >2 m above natural ground level, it is also an assessable development. The council also has some guidance on who is responsible for retaining walls that are on a shared boundary. When you work with Hammer & Shine, we’ll help guide you through any council regulations and approvals.
How much do you charge for retaining wall installation?
Since we custom quote every project, it’s hard to say — it will depend on the materials, access, length, and height of the retaining wall.
